Barry L. Holden

Dr. Holden earned his Bachelor of Science degree and graduated with distinction from the Pennsylvania State University in 1980. While attending Penn State, he was recognized as a Superior Scholar Athlete. In 1984, he completed his Doctorate of Dental Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh followed by his Post-Doctorate degree in Periodontics in 1986 at the Medical College of Virginia.

Dr. Holden has been practicing Periodontics in State College, PA since 1986. He is a past president of the 7th District Dental Society/Central Pennsylvania Dental Society. He has also served the profession as a delegate to the Pennsylvania Dental Association and an alternate delegate for the American Dental Association. He has represented periodontists in PA, DE, MD, DC, WV, and Northern Virginia as part of the District 2 Dental Association.

He also retains a number of professional affiliations with the American Academy of Periodontology, PA Society of Periodontists, American Dental Association, and the American Academy of Osseointegration. Dr. Holden obtained his Dental Anesthesia Permit for Conscious Sedation. He holds a dental license in both Pennsylvania and Virginia.

Dr. Holden became board certified in periodontics in 1992. Becoming a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology entailed rigorous additional study as well as written and oral examination.

Dr Holden is married with two adult children. His daughter graduated from dental school in 2018 and completed her Periodontal Residency at VCU School of Dentistry in May of 2021. After completing a Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Dr Holden’s son lives and works in the Washington D.C. Metro Area.

Dr. John Powe

John Powe, DDS, MS holds a Masters Degree in Anatomy and his Doctorate of Dental Surgery from Howard University in Washington DC. Dr. Powe taught Anatomy for 6 years at Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS), affectionately known as the Military Medical School in Bethesda, MD. His love of Anatomy and Surgery led him to complete an Internship year in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the prestigious University of Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia.

Dr. Powe used his skills in private practice by providing surgical care throughout New York and Connecticut, performing over 38,000 extractions, predominantly wisdom teeth. His desire to offer patients the highest level of comfort led him to complete a Dental Anesthesiology residency at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY. As one of only 9 programs in the United States and Canada that train a dentist to be an Anesthesiologist, Dr. Powe was one of only two residents selected, performing over 2900 cases.

Dr. Powe then completed his Periodontal and Implant Surgery residency at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Powe has continued his education to stay in the forefront of patient care earning certifications in Botox and Derm Fill, Wilckodontics, Chao Pinhole Surgery, VISTA surgical technique, as well as Zygomatic and Pterygoid Implants. He is a member of the American Dental Association, the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology, the American Academy of Periodontology, and the Academy of Osseointegration.

Dr. Powe is the only Dual Specialty Trained Periodontist/Implantologist and Dental Anesthesiologist in the Tri-State area and one of only a handful of Doctors in the World to have achieved this honor. Dr. Powe is passionate about Volunteering, providing Surgical and Anesthesia care during Mission trips to Guyana and Jamaica as well as Mission of Mercy. As the son of two Air Force officers Dr. Powe is no stranger to travel but looks to call Pennsylvania home. Dr. Powe is the first and only Periodontist in the UPMC health system but his greatest accolade is being a consummate #Girldad to his blessings: Kaelynn and Rylee. Dr. Powe loves traveling with his family, sports, and is an avid outdoorsman.
